Jay and Silent BobOh hey, did you hear? The Weinstein Company and Miramax came up with a totally genius idea to take a bunch of their best-loved and critically acclaimed movies and churn out unnecessary sequels (some that will likely go direct-to-DVD) or TV-spinoffs for them. First on the list are "Shakespeare in Love," "Rounders" and "Bad Santa," which will soon be followed by a third "Clerks," and third "Bridget Jones's Diary," and yet another "From Dusk Till Dawn," in addition to many, many other terrible ideas. I think I'm going to let "Clerks" creator Kevin Smith take it away from here for a little while.

"I sold the movie to [Miramax] in 1994," Smith wrote on his Twitter account. "But I guess if someone was going to exploit the library for sequels, remakes, TV, I'd rather it be the devil I know. Nice to know there's a home for 'Clerks III' if I ever wanted to make it, but hope it doesn't become a home for a 'Clerks'-anything if I'm not involved." Better hold your breath, Smith.

He continues that the idea of a "Clerks 3" without his consent is further complicated by the fact that he owns "Clerks" staples Jay and Silent Bob, not Miramax, so it would be tough for the company to go forward with the films without him being involved in the project. The only film they own of his that doesn't have anything to do with Jay and Silent Bob? "Jersey Girl."

"From my personal experience, there's little to no interest in a sequel or remake [of 'Jersey Girl'], unless it opens with JLo's dead Mom busting out of her earthen grave, trampling her only begotten daughter's copy of a Nerconomicon as she eats her brains," Smith joked. "If they wanna do THAT 'Jersey Girl' sequel, I'm totally in." Suggested title: "Jersey Ghoul."

But really? Do sequels to "Shall We Dance" or "The Amityville Horror" sound any better than that? It would certainly seem that Weinstein Co. and Miramax are going forward with this sequel plan not for creative reasons, but for a profit. Good thing they don't own the rights to "Titanic."

Do you think these sequels are a good idea? Tell us in the comments!
